Is Business Intelligence an oxymoron?

[tweetmemeOf course the So.Me explosion in digital nests and the creation of endless lists is not new nor is it confined to the Internet. We see this activity undertaken every day at every level across businesses large and small around the globe. Wether it is at the enterprise or the departmental level, the office of the CFO, the CMO, human resources, PMO or the PPO. Public and private sector employees are busy searching endless lists and taking the information back to their digital nests before sharing it with others.

When I designed my first BI system I, like most newcomers attempting to solve the challenges presented by big data, fell into the trap of thinking more is better. Gather all you can and let the audience discover what is in the data for themselves. I even went so far as to create a methodology for gathering and serving up the data. It was called the StrategicPIC and this is what it looked like back in 2001.
